1. An Awareness of Space
Space is first. In art there are 3 spaces. There is Artistic Space which is the blank paper or canvas. There is the physical space all around us. And there is the inner space of the mind with its thoughts, emotions & images. An artist is able to move back & forth between these spaces using creativity & imagination.
An Awareness of Space
Creates a Space filled with Awareness
Creates a Space filled with Awareness
When a space is empty we become aware of the nothingness in the space. When there is an object in the space, usually we become more focused on the object.
An artist practices being aware of both the space & the objects in the space simultaneously.

2. Line
For warm ups, practice making different kinds of lines on paper. Long flowing, short choppy, dark & strong, faint as a whisper, jagged, curved, dotted etc.
3. Draw a Leaf
Draw a leaf from your memory & imagination. It doesn't matter what it looks like just have fun making something up.
When you've completed your imaginary leaf, find a real leaf & draw it. Take a trip around the edge of the leaf & draw your journey. Slow way down & take your time. After the outside shape has been drawn, turn your attention to the middle of the leaf. If the leaf is darker than the paper, use your pencil to darken the leaf. Draw the stalk & veins, and little holes, nooks & crannies, rips & tares.
